Mariam's story

A close up of a middle aged woman who is looking directly into the camera. She looks worried.

After my husband died, our family income dropped. I got into lots of debt - even though I work long hours.

Mariam

Mariam is a support worker and mother of 3. After her husband died, she struggled to make ends meet and got into debt, despite being in full-time employment.

When Mariam visited Citizens Advice, our adviser realised she was entitled to double the amount of government support. We also helped her get the best deal possible on her phone, energy and childcare bills, and gave her a budget planner to help her maximise her finances.

Things are still tough, but Mariam now feels more positive about the future.

This support has really helped my mental health, and I feel more confident about managing my money.

Helping people through their toughest times

Millions of people are struggling with the cost of living. They’re facing a nightmare they never thought they would experience. With costs for food, housing and energy bills sky high, families are struggling to make ends meet. It’s stressful, isolating and frightening.

These increased costs affect us all, but for those in vulnerable situations they can be catastrophic. Every day we’re seeing thousands of people who need emergency support, people relying on food banks, and people who can’t afford the basic essentials.

Our advisers are a lifeline, providing expert advice and practical support to people like Mariam facing unthinkable hardship. Our teams are working flat out, but we can’t keep up with the number of people who urgently need our help.

Citizens Advice is a charity - we can’t do this alone. Your donation today could change a life - please help us be there for those facing their toughest times.
